Can we address the elephant in the room?

SEO isn't what it used to be.

It's not dead, but it sure feels different.

Many website owners, SEO specialists, and strategists woke up on January 2nd, 2025 to find their traffic had tanked.

And not just a little.

A massive drop that quickly wiped out the holiday cheer.

So, Why Did This Happen?

Throughout 2024, Google rolled out multiple core and spam updates, including the March, June, August, November, and December updates, as shown in the image below:

Google had been warning us for months...

Many content creators on YouTube, like Wes McDowell, had been sounding the alarm too.

That video is from almost a year ago...

Wes wasn't lying when he said:

"Google's about to make a change that's going to make traditional SEO completely useless. If you're not ready, you'll lose out to competitors who are."

Is Google Prioritizing Paid Results?

Remember when long-tail keywords were gold for search traffic? Well, even if Google won’t say it outright, paid ads seem to be taking over, giving big brands the top spots.

Search for terms like:

  • "What is email marketing?"

  • "Best project management tools?"

  • "How to create a marketing strategy?"

The first results you see? Sponsored posts. Paid ads.

What About Google Gemini and Zero-Click Searches?

Google's AI push, Gemini, is changing search again. Gemini also uses advanced machine learning to predict user intent more accurately, prioritizing immediate answers over directing traffic.

This shift means website visibility depends even more on offering unique, valuable content.

Zero-click results occur when Google provides answers directly on the search page without users needing to click on a website link.

Google search shows "How old is Elon Musk?" with results: "53 years, June 28, 1971". Images of a man in formal wear. Dark theme interface.

These results aim to provide quick answers but often reduce organic traffic for websites.

People get answers right on the search page.

No clicks. Less traffic for you.

A Real Example: When Traffic Drops Despite Quality Content

A user recently shared a frustrating experience on the Google Search Console Community.

After writing human-generated, well-researched content and seeing success with their website, they experienced a massive drop in traffic after the December 2024 Google Spam Update.

A product expert responded, explaining the likely causes and offering recommendations, including:

  • Align with E-E-A-T: Emphasize expertise, authority, and trust in your content and author bios.

  • Avoid Spammy Elements: Minimize excessive ads, thin content, or manipulative SEO tactics.

  • Enhance User Experience: Improve site speed, ensure mobile-friendliness, and avoid intrusive ads.

  • Diversify Traffic Sources: Relying only on Google can be risky. Build social media presence, email lists, and referral traffic.

Alrighty, then...

Now what?!

How Can People Still Find You?

Let's take a deep breath. There are still plenty of ways to stay visible and keep your audience engaged

1. Stop Relying Only on Google

  • Try platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

  • YouTube is the second-largest search engine and way less complicated than Google SEO.

2. Use More Video Content

  • Video builds trust faster. Plus, YouTube videos show up in Google results.

  • As McDowell said, "People would rather watch a video than read a long blog post." I might be shooting myself in the foot with this one, but it's true.

Being camera shy is valid—I go mute as soon as a camera starts recording—but there are many creators on YouTube who use avatars or other strategies to stay anonymous.

You can also hire a video creator to help you achieve your goals.

3. Own Your Audience

  • Build a strong email list. Focus on content you control.

  • Newsletters are still one of the most effective ways to stay connected.

4. SEO Isn't Dead, It's Just Different

  • Focus on EEAT: Expertise, Experience, Authority, Trust.

  • Quality matters more than pumping out endless posts.

5. Ditch Black Hat Tactics

  • Buying backlinks or stuffing keywords? Hurts more than it helps.

If you've resorted to these tactics, Google suggests the following:

Why Your Website Still Needs SEO

SEO is still essential for keeping your website visible and effective. Not optimizing your website can leave you off the map, making it harder for potential customers to find you.

Key areas of SEO you should focus on:

  • On-page SEO: Meta descriptions, title tags, and internal links help search engines understand your content better.

  • Technical SEO: Ensures your site loads quickly and works well on mobile devices, improving the user experience.

  • Local SEO: Helps you rank for location-based searches, connecting you with nearby audiences.

Google isn't SEO

Yeah, Google runs the show, but it doesn't mean we stop trying just because the game changed. While Google dominates the search engine market, optimizing your website for other platforms can expand your audience.

Some platforms have unique user bases and purposes that make them worth considering for SEO strategies.

The following statistics are sourced from StatCounter and Statista as of December 2024:

  • Bing: Microsoft's search engine holds approximately 3.97% of the global market share.

  • DuckDuckGo: Known for its privacy-focused approach, DuckDuckGo has a market share of 0.66%.

  • Yahoo!: Although its share has declined, Yahoo! still accounts for about 1.29% of worldwide searches.

  • Ecosia: Ecosia, with a smaller but growing market share, uses 100% of its profits for environmental initiatives, such as planting trees and generating twice the renewable energy required to power its entire search engine activity.

  • YouTube: As the second-largest search engine with over 2.5 billion monthly active users, video SEO can be a game-changer.

  • Reddit: With its vast user-driven communities, Reddit is becoming a go-to platform for niche searches and discussions, offering visibility through engagement in subreddits.

  • Amazon: Amazon, a top choice for product searches, handles nearly 37.8% of all U.S. e-commerce sales, making it essential for e-commerce SEO.

By optimizing for these search engines, you can diversify your traffic sources, reduce dependence on a single platform, and ensure greater visibility across the web.

Your Website is Still Your Storefront

Think of your website like a physical store.

People need to know where you are.

Good SEO builds trust, increases visibility, and drives organic traffic, keeping your website relevant in a constantly changing digital world.

Google might be making it harder, but it doesn't mean you're invisible.

Show up everywhere.

Create content people care about.

Build relationships.

The SEO game has changed. But staying visible?

Totally possible in 2025.
